Believe in You! Tips to Boost your Self-belief

How many times have you missed out on an opportunity in life, career or love just because you lacked self-belief? How many times have you side stepped or run away in terror from a challenge because you lacked confidence or self-esteem, only to see someone else grab the opportunity?

One of the cornerstones to achieving what we want in our careers, business ventures, relationships, health and life in general is to believe in ourselves. Yes, yes, you may say, “I’ve heard all that before”. Yet, what does self-belief actually mean?

Self belief is an inner quality of unshakeable conviction, genuine appreciation, steadfast determination and unbridled passion all rolled up into one.

Successful people around the world exhibit rock-solid self belief. These people accept life’s challenges, willingly pursue their dreams and keep going despite the odds. Their self-belief fuels their passion to achieve their vision.

Can you imagine what it would be like to apply the power of self belief to yourself and your life? Imagine what you can achieve, who you can become or what you can contribute. The key is to believe in you!

Tips to Boost your Self-belief

  • Identify your unique qualities or your strengths! Make a list of your positive qualities, talents, skills and unique gifts. Ask yourself these questions. “What makes me unique?” “What is my special gift to the world?” We all have something unique and special to offer. What is your gift?
  • Record and acknowledge your life’s achievements! No matter if they are small or grandiose.  Write these out on a card that you can keep in your diary, wallet or bag and make time to review these daily.
  • Share your achievements and strenghts! When you share your achievements and unique strengths with your family, friends or work colleagues they become tangible and real for you. By sharing you spread the excitement about your life.
  • Reward and congratulate yourself on your achievements! Create a positive mental feedback loop. Whether it’s an inner “Yes I did it” for having completed a project, commting to a goal or taking action. Reward yourself with a weekend away or an afternoon of pampering.
  • Clarify what you are passionate about in each area of your life. Ask yourself “What do I love to do?”, “What brings me joy?”, “What’s important to me”. Identify how you can action these things into your life.
  • Make the choice to believe in yourself today! Rather than wasting time criticising and judging yourself, direct your focus on the positive events, experiences and results in your life. As the saying goes, “Where focus goes, energy flows”.

Why the quick fix doesn’t work!

In today’s world we’re all after the quick fix. The fastest way to be happy, healthy, rich, thin, popular, liked or successful. Time is of the essence and we’re all short on time. However what is the quick fix? In the fastness of it all, the quick fix is like a dodgy renovation or a bog job on a car. It’s a fast make over to disguise the corrosion underneath. It’s like shoving what’s falling apart into a deep, dark, recess and covering it over with a lot of bog or putty. All filler and no substance.

So what does the bog or putty look like? It can be distractions, retail therapy, unhealthy relationships, over indulgence of food or alcohol, emotional numbness or just cheap stuff to fill the hole.

Why do we choose the cover over? We’re all so busy rushing in life that we’re jumping from one thing to the next. We know that things might not be right, that there are cracks appearing in the walls, or our wardrobes are full of stuff bursting at the sides. We have this niggling feeling that there might be rising damp, however we have no time to look under the floorboards.

What we’re really doing is avoiding facing what’s not working, what we are afraid of or what we think we can’t do. It all seems too hard, too huge and too overwhelming. Like a Mount Everest we have to climb but don’t know how. So it’s easier to stay in the comfort zone and just put up with things or complain about what we don’t like. It’s easier to feel like we’ve failed rather than take the risk of trying. It’s just easier to bog up the pain, doubt, anxiety, loneliness, insecurity rather than doing something about it.

And so we get caught up in the habit of avoidance, denial, or overwhelm instead of facing things square on. We go to great lengths to avoid dealing with what isn’t working to the point of stuffing these things into the deep recesses hoping they’ll stay there. Faced with the next drama we yell, “Quick get the putty. We have an urgent cover up!”

Yet one day, the bog falls off the car revealing the rust and corrosion underneath. The putty falls off the wall revealing a termite infestation weakening the structural integrity of our home.

So how do we tackle the quick fix dilemma you might ask? Here are some simple steps to get you going:

1. Realise that you are in fact chasing the quick fix to our life challenges. So start to address one area that’s not working for you rather than the whole lot.

2. Take an objective viewpoint and assess your challenging situation and your part in it.

3. Break it down into a feeling, a thought and a habitual pattern you can work with. Assess what you can learn from this.

4. Now decide to do things differently. Choose a new feeling, thought and habit. Try it on for size and see how it fits into your future.

5. Do this exercise on a regular basis working with each area of your life that you used to ‘quick fix’.

Put this exercise in your tool kit. Practice it daily so you are ready for your next internal renovation.

Value the specialness of you!

Ask people what they value and they’ll likely say: money, their home, their job, taking holidays or a prized possession. We generally value things that we think have worth, either monetary or we can make some use out of them. Yet how many of us value who we are inside: our unique qualities, special attributes, character traits, our insights and wisdom. Some people do, yet many take these for granted or don’t even think about placing value upon them.

Have you thought about what is unique or special? Is it the warmth of your smile? Is it the way you can find the funny side to an otherwise challenging situation? Is it the way you are warm and welcoming of people you meet? Could it be your patience even when you feel stretched? What about how you go out of your way to give someone a hand? Could it be the way you listen to others so they feel genuinely heard?

Ask yourself if you genuinely value those unique and special parts of you? When we genuinely value these aspects of ourselves they have worth for us. When something has worth for us we look after it, see it as something special and have a desire to share it with others. By creating inner value we send the message to ourselves that we are in fact worthy of receiving all we desire, being what we aspire to be and doing all the things we dream of.

As we build a picture of ourselves as having value we are encouraged to look after our: relationship with our self, health, emotional stability, attitude and mindset and physical appearance. We’re more inclined to pamper our body, take time out, dare to dream, focus on our health and nutrition or allow ourselves to discover what makes our heart sing. Through valuing ourselves we expand our ability to see the uniqueness and specialness in others.
